Become a Hauppauge Volunteer Firefighter

HAUPPAUGE HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

There are some real benefits to joining the Hauppauge Fire Department.

  • Scholarship Assistance - Scholarship Assistance may be available at Suffolk County Community College through the Suffolk County SERVES Program. In addition, if you take fire service related courses at Suffolk Community you might be eligible for extra funding through the Hauppauge Fire District.
  • Career Advancement - Is a career with the FDNY or one of the local police agencies something that you are considering? Being a volunteer firefighter is a great way to learn and to demonstrate to potential employers that you have the dedication it takes. Many of our members are now or were formerly high ranking members with the FDNY and many of our members work in law enforcement.

HAUPPAUGE residents

If you live in the Hauppauge Fire District there are real benefits to being a volunteer firefighter.

  • If you own your own home you may be entitled to a tax discount on a portion of your real estate tax bill.
  • Firefighters are enrolled in our LOSAP Program - a pension plan that pays you a pension when you reach the age of 62 (based on the number of years that you serve as an active firefighter)
  • AFLAC Accidental Injury and Cancer insurance provided at no cost by the Hauppauge Fire District
  • Use of the Fire District Physical Fitness Center
  • Yearly medical exams covered by the District

PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU HAVE PRIOR FIRE FIGHTER EXPERIENCE, SOME OR ALL OF THE TRAINING REQUIREMENTS MAY BE WAIVED IF YOU HAVE ALREADY TAKEN THE REQUIRED BASIC COURSES.

Upon completion of the basic required courses, the member will receive further training in such fire related courses as Firefighter 2, Confined Space & Technical Rescue, HazMat,  Rapid Intervention, and CPR / AED, just to name a few. Our training is extensive and ongoing. In addition to training at the Suffolk County Fire Academy, members participate in various drills each Sunday. Being able to commit to the training is a must.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What am I volunteering for?
A: You are volunteering to become a Class "A" firefighter. A Class "A" firefighter must be physically and mentally fit to perform all firefighting tasks including the wearing of self-contained breathing apparatus. In addition, you must be willing to work in dangerous emergency conditions.

Q: Are there any other positions that I can volunteer for?
A: No

Q: Can I just be a driver?
A: No. All chauffeurs are trained firefighters.

Q: I have a beard / facial hair. Can I still join?
A: Only if you are willing to shave your beard. A mustache is permitted as long as it will not interfere with the breathing apparatus face mask. Facial hair interferes with the seal of the mask and creates a hazard for the firefighter. It also violates OSHA regulations.
